What is FFA?

FFA is an intracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership. It is one of the three components of agricultural education: FFA, Supervised Agricultural Experiences, and Classroom Instruction. FFA develops members' potential and helps them discover their talent through hands-on experiences, which gives members the tools to achieve real-world success. FFA membership is open to students in grades 5-12 and college enrolled in an agricultural education course. Mississippi FFA activities occur on the chapter, regional, and state levels.

Mississippi FFA is comprised of:

  • The Mississippi FFA Association - The 4,000 student-members and 109 chapters led by the Mississippi FFA State Officer Team. 

  • The Mississippi FFA Alumni and Supporters - The Alumni functions as a supportive resource to Mississippi FFA members at the state and local level. 

  • The Mississippi FFA Foundation - The Mississippi FFA Foundation raises funds and support for Mississippi FFA through individual donations, corporate partnerships, grants, and fundraising events.

  • Mississippi Association of Agricultural Educators - Agricultural educators are the foundation on which our organization succeeds. MSAAE serves as a professional development resource to all agricultural education teachers across the state.

Why Ag Ed?

Agriculture is Mississippi's number one industry, contributing nearly $9.5 billion to our state's economy each year and employing more than 11 percent of the workforce across all 82 counties. From the fertile fields of the Mississippi Delta to the timber forests of the Piney Woods and the aquaculture ponds of the Gulf Coast region, the Magnolia State's agricultural heritage runs deep, and its future depends on the next generation of leaders, innovators, and problem solvers.

Agricultural education is how we develop that generation. In Mississippi, ag ed courses including Principles of Agriscience, Horticulture, Forestry, Agriculture Power and Machinery, Aquaculture, and Meat Science give students hands-on, relevant learning experiences that connect classroom instruction to real-world careers. These programs are available as early as the eighth grade, ensuring students have the opportunity to discover their passions and build their skills long before graduation.

But agricultural education is about far more than farming. It is a gateway to careers in science, business, communications, technology, natural resources, and countless other fields. Whether a student plans to work on a farm, in a laboratory, at a corporate headquarters, or in public service, the critical thinking, problem solving, and leadership skills gained through ag ed provide a competitive edge in any profession.

Through the three pillars of agricultural education, classroom instruction, Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE), and FFA, Mississippi students grow into confident, capable individuals ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Agricultural education is not just a class. It is a calling, a community, and a career launchpad all in one.

The Future of FFA

The future of Mississippi FFA is as rich and promising as the soil that has sustained this state for generations. Agriculture is the backbone of Mississippi's economy, and the next chapter of that story will be written by the students in our classrooms and chapters today. As technology continues to reshape the way we grow, harvest, and manage our natural resources, Mississippi FFA is committed to preparing members for the careers and challenges that lie ahead.

From advancements in precision agriculture and AgTech to growing opportunities in food science, natural resource management, and rural entrepreneurship, the scope of agricultural careers available to Mississippi students has never been broader. With more than 100 local chapters across the state, Mississippi FFA is expanding access to hands-on learning experiences that connect students to those opportunities, whether they come from the Mississippi Delta, the Piney Woods, or anywhere in between.

Mississippi holds a unique distinction as the only state in the nation to offer a Junior FFA program, welcoming students as young as eight years old into the FFA family. This early investment in agricultural education means that the pipeline of future leaders, innovators, and advocates for Mississippi agriculture begins well before high school, giving our members more time to grow, learn, and lead.

As Mississippi FFA looks ahead, our mission remains the same: to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. The future of farming, food, and rural communities in Mississippi depends on the young people we are developing today, and we are proud to be a part of that story.
